metaphor
metaphors
One of the most obvious metaphors in computer applications is the menu. A menu
in a restaurant provides you with a list of available items from which you can select
what you want. When you try to order something that is not available, the
waitperson informs you of that fact and you make another selection. A computer
menu provides the same type of functionality by providing a list of available and
unavailable options from which you can select what you want.
Breadcrumb trail navigation
One of the key benefits of Windows-based applications is that they typically do
not constrain a user to an input sequence, so users have more control. You
should also consider adding breadcrumb trail navigation functionality to the
interface. This type of navigation shows the path the user has navigated to get to
the current position. To see an example of a Web site that uses breadcrumb trail
navigation functionality, see the article “The Developing Phase,” on the MSDN
Web site, at
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en-us/dnsolac/html/m05_develphase1.asp
